A lifelong documentary filmmaker and pioneer of cinema verite, Fontaine’s remarkable body of work includes The Beatles before Beatlemania, Norman Mailer at his 1967 arrest at the Pentagon, Ornette Coleman and the New Wave of American jazz, the funeral of Black Panther George Jackson, jazz giant Art Blakey, and, with long time co-director Pat Hartley, Afrika Bambaataa, Kool DJ Herc, and the South Bronx originators of hip-hop years before they were lionized as progenitors of a new global culture, . PAT HARTLEY
Producer, director, actress, screenwriter, subject of Andy Warhol’s Screen Test. Hartley’s acting work includes Heathcote Williams’ AC/DC at London’s Royal Court Theatre, and Rainbow Bridge with Jimi Hendrix. She also co-directed Beat This! A Hip-Hop History and Bombin’ with late husband, Dick Fontaine. Hartley’s short film series Hung Up and Domestic Victories shine a light on the dark side of love. Learn More
